Advisor Report on Leadership, Technology and Engagement
Level: Intermediate Audience: ALL Staff

Student Life is changing faster than ever. Advisors are expected to be on the cutting edge, and often find themselves drowned in paperwork and procedures. This session discusses the most current trends on tools such as Basecamp, Facebook, and RSS feeds. Listen, share, and discuss best practices with other advisors.

Membership Retention: Maintaining Involvement
Keeping people involved is vitally important to your institution's success.  Learn from a facilitator who has over 20 years of experience in retaining students in campus organizations, keeping volunteers active and interested, and holding on to employees in a business setting. This session will put the meat on the bones of retention!

Mission-Driven Programs: Creating Campus Collaboration
It's perhaps the most common missed opportunity on any college campus. While campus entertainment should be fun, it can also be culturally enriching, or have an educational slant. But more importantly, programs can serve to reach across campus and bring students, faculty, and staff together. You often hear those common buzz-words among the administration on campus, words like "campus community," and "experiential learning." The programming staff on your campus-- whether it's Student Activities, Student Life, Student Involvement, and Student Leadership-- can truly be the key to campus collaboration in learning. This program discusses various ways to integrate student activities into the teaching/learning mission of the school, and seek to facilitate a true campus collaboration.Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities

Risk Management in Campus Life

Additionally, dealing with fraternities, alcohol and the inherent advisor liability issues of students sneaking / having alcohol at authorized school functions where advisors are present will be discussed.  Participant questions will be taken.

Assessment:  New thoughts on an idea that is here to stay
The Lumina Foundation recently published a document titled "Data Don't Drive: Building a Practitioner Culture of Inquiry....." The idea that we as student life professionals need to do more than one thing and do well may seem a bit overwhelming but the mandate is for us to be leaders in our divisions and on our campus. The principles of assessment and how they can be used to really measure student learning and growth will be a focus of this session. More then just random exit evaluations after events and workshops, assessment really can be used as a tool to measure meaningful growth and build credibility for student life professionals. Join us in this high energy session that will offer ideas, plans and hopefully a good bit of participant discussion.

Diversity Is Like A Box Of Chocolates
What will you get? More than what you put in, is the answer. Be ready to think, smile, be challenged and embrace our interaction because you will leave more enlightened than when you entered. This will help in addressing yourself, your campus and your military bases.  Typically, we think we know, but we have no idea so be ready to hear and discuss things behind closed doors that will strengthen your mind and educate your soul.

Bigger Crowds and Better Shows!
It takes more than just booking Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews to have a great concert. Okay, bad example. But what if you can't afford major acts? Are your programs destined to fail? Absolutely not! This session is a potpourri of promotion, production, scheduling, and planning ideas to help lift your programs out of the doldrums. Relevant to any type of program from major concert to coffeehouse to comedy club.

Too Many Big Words: Contracts & Commitments
This panel discussion including agents and advisors will dissect all the details of doing business in the college market.  We will discuss everything from the initial contact with the agent or artist through the contracting process.  The focus of this session will be on the early stages of the booking process from negotiation to understanding contracts and riders.  Students and advisors and invited to share questions and stories of failure and success.

Dance Floor Theory:  How to Solve Apathy on Your Campus
Rock a dance floor: rock a college campus. Why do people not dance? Why do people not participate in college? Most importantly, as a student leader, how can you get more people involved?  Play with leverage, momentum, and successful social management, then blend it together to forever change the way you see your campus. (You don't have to dance - unless you want to. ;)

Re-Energize Your Programming Board
Who else wants to know where to find the best student leaders...and how put them to work? You will get insider information about what successful groups are doing daily to keep your organization motivated year round. Trust me, you've never seen marketing, delegation, and fundraising secrets explained like this! Sprinkled with real-world examples of how to create immediate changes where they're needed most, how to create incentive programs that boost member participation, and how to ignite a passion for the organization.

Expresso Yourself with a Great Coffeehouse Series
How do you present solo artists, comedians, small bands, films, poetry readings, and open mic shows in the same program series? That's easy-- it's called A Coffeehouse Series. The hottest new program idea is coming straight out of the past, even if it's decaf and smoke-free!

Putting Together Trips on a Small Budget
Let's face it most schools and student organizations don't have unlimited budgets but we can still have fun! Come learn valuable secretes about planning a memorable trip for your students that will be both fun and educational as well as some fundraisers and processes to making the money management possible.  My personal philosophy is that students should never have to pay to go on a school trip and we've had some really awesome trips! Come learn what you can do to experience great trips at your school.

Playing Well With Others: Dealing With Conflict In Student Organizations
Conflict can arise between leaders and members of student organizations. Rather than letting the whole situation explode and the group implode, this workshop will show you how to spot conflict before it happens, deal with it when it does and how to hold the organization together.

Super Study Skills for Super Busy College Students
College and university students have many demands on their time: jobs, activities, friends, the internet, and… school!  This session will show students how to effectively plan their time and get the most out of their study efforts.

Code of the Road
How are your students expected to behave at off- campus events?  What travel policies are conducive to student safety and which ones are meaningless and unenforceable? This session will discuss how to write a "code of the road" policy and delegate contract that explains in detail what is expected of students attending conferences and traveling to school-sponsored events.  All participants are encouraged to bring their own travel policies and discuss successes and challenges they have had regarding the use of these instruments. Successful delegate contracts will be distributed and discussed.
