Ed sessions/Staff seminars
APCA conferences feature educational sessions on a variety of basic programming strategies for students, and professional development seminars for advisors. Scheduled topics include Campus Law, retreat organization, fighting burnout and the latest retention and recruitment strategies!

APCA Programming Conference Educational Sessions

The following ed sessions are examples of the type of ed sessions that will be presented at the APCA Programming Conference.

Broadening your promotional boundaries
Audience: Staff, Graduate Students Level: Basic
Advertising is the easiest thing in the world—you just buy some big ads. But what if you don't have the budget? Are you destined to have poor attendance at your shows? Absolutely not! Here are some proven techniques to promote your programs without going broke. We'll discuss individual show promotion, the power of series promotion, and numerous ideas to get a crowd to your programs.
 
From: AVERAGE To: ALL AMERICAN
Audience:
Grad Students, Students Level: Basic
Still looking for your path in college and life? Then follow this story of transformation from a 'C' student in high school to college All-American and find your passion through student involvement . You will discover the community of greatness within your college and yourself.
 
Alternative Student Government Models For Community and Commuter Colleges
Audience:
Staff, Grad Students Level: Intermediate
Are you tired of elections for Student Government that include 4% of your student body? Worse yet, elections that do not have enough candidates for the election process? How about students that had to be cajoled into running for a position and then feel no real responsibility to perform the duties of the position? These concerns and many other frustrations with SGA's can be resolved! Come and hear how in this session!
 
Stretching Your Boarders To Match Your Goals
Audience:
All Level: Basic
Delegates will be asked to participate in a series of activities that will highlight group dynamics and accomplishing goals both individually and as a team. Participants will be given a self-contract for reinforcement of personal goals as well as an opportunity to express organizational goals. The activities will illustrate the principals behind goal setting,and can be used for groups conducting orientations, new officer training and other various leadership programs.

Need new programming ideas? Welcome to the wonderful world of games! Come learn new activities that actually have a purpose! You'll leave with a fantastic list of games to add to your programming repertoire and learn the skills necessary to effectively facilitate them. Not only will you stay awake, but you will have a great time!
 
Campus Activities Legal Issues
Audience:
Staff Level: Advanced
Educators in student development and campus activities will meet with attorney Adam Lambert. The topics will be the recent Supreme Court Decision affecting the use of student activity fees, contracts and riders, sexual harassment in the campus environment and free speech legal guidelines. Mr. Lambert will explain the legal issues and discuss various protective possibilities. (This presentation should in no way be constructed as interpreting state laws or institutional policies.)
 
Break On Through to the Other Side
Audience:
All Level: Basic
We'll take a look at the barriers you put up that keep you from achieving what you want, and then we'll 'break' through those barriers. On the other side, we'll look at the incredible outcomes you can have once your barriers are broken. This session will challenge you and push you through your limits. If you attend, you must be willing to totally go for it 100%! Because of the intensity of this session, only the first 50 people may participate. This is a session like none other.
 
Social Vaccine: Programming and Diversity

All Level: Basic

A key pre-requisite to any type of productive activity in your organization is team synergy. How to accomplish this is the challenge. This session will provide meaningful feedback, ideas and suggestions for your organization on how to realize its maximum potential in building the most effective student team organization.
 
Strategic Planning and Student Activities
Audience:
Staff, Students Level: Intermediate
Yes, that's right! Strategic planning and student activities are a fit. Demographic data and Evaluations, costs estimating all have a place in programming. Some schools develop programming based on gut feelings of what our students like. Sometimes we hit the target, and sometimes we are way off. Join us as we discuss the benefits of implementing a planning process which can be utilized throughout the year, and how those outcomes can help your student activities board plan an even better year!
 
Creating a Leadership Mission
Audience:
All Level: Basic
Most people know how to create a mission statement but do you know how to create a leadership mission? This innovative tool can be used for creating mission statements for organizations or prayer for religious groups or annual target goals for SGAs and other focus areas for organiza-tions requiring everyone's input. Put on your thinking caps and come prepared to create and marvel at what you and your colleagues construct together. This is a process you can take back and apply to every student leadership organization.
 
Cafeteria Shows: Making the Best of a Bad Situation
Audience:
Staff, Grad Students Level: Basic
The cafeteria is both the best place and the worst place to present a program, because a performer needs more than just a crowd to be successful. This session covers the various elements involved in presenting a performance and targets those, which specifically apply to cafeterias. Schools will actually learn how to present a cafeteria show in a proven successful manner. This session will examine the cafeteria show from all angles, discussing the elements needed to turn a "cafeteria gig" into "dinner theatre."
 
Association for the Promotion of Campus ActivitiesMaking Conflict Disappear!
Audience:
All Level: Intermediate
A conflict resolution method test will be presented to students for personal growth and understanding, as well as team work improvement. Each participant will take the instrument and then debrief it as a group, and explain how it can apply to their teams.
 
Orientation Activities
Audience:
All Level: Basic
You guessed it...Name Games, icebreakers and energizers. No chairs allowed in this workshop. It's all non-stop fun!!!
 
Work With What You Have To Get What You Want!
Audience:
All Level: Basic
This session will show you how to tackle any challenge..large and/or small. You will be encouraged to reach higher and dig deeper than you ever have before to get what you want out of life. There are hidden treasures within all of us and unless you know where to find them and how to obtain the keys to unlock them, you will never experience the true riches of life.
 
Learn the Ropes of Leadership
Audience:
All Level: Basic
Don't just talk about leadership, discover and experience it through low ROPES COURSE EVENTS! This hands-on, interactive session will introduce you to several ropes course events you can use at your school. These events are great at inspiring groups to pull together to overcome any obstacle.
 
Build a Productive Programming Manual
Audience:
All Level: Basic
I would like to offer our Programming Manual as an example and talk about how you can use resources like the APCA manual to build a Programming Manual that is tailored to your own institution.
 
Burnout Diagnosis and Recovery
Audience:
Staff Level: Advanced
This session for activities professionals explores the concept of how to regain our energy and mental wellness. The process of burnout and recovery will be presented along with preventative and recuperative strategies.
 
Change Your Perspective on Leadership
Audience:
All Level: Basic
Another leadership session? They're everywhere, and they center on topics like leadership philosophy, leadership style, eight steps to being a great leader, etc. This seminar is more practical and simplistic. It focuses on tips that will help you in your career and make you a more effective leader. Suggestions and discussions that will help you to be a better person and leader.
 
Expanding Your Relationship With Teamwork!
Audience:
All Level: Basics
Specific subject areas include the importance of a leader being faithful and loyal to the organization and its members, members' responsibility to each other and the group and developing and maintaining expectations. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from each other in this interactive program.
