A Great Leadership Experience For Advisors And Students! Free Ticket To A Broadway Show For First 200 Registered Delegates.

The APCA Leadership on Broadway Experience is a wonderful training opportunity for both advisors and students working in campus activities and related student life fields. The training is two full days, with free time in the evening for your delegation to experience what New York City has to offer. The conference facility is the beautiful Marriott Marquis in the heart of Times Square, and there will be many wonderful opportunities to build student unity, advance your professional horizons, and engage with peers in the industry. This will be an experience of a lifetime.

Kevin Kruger

President of NASPA

An accomplished speaker, leader, and educator, Kevin Kruger joined NASPA as Associate Executive Director in 1994, and became its first executive-level President on March 15, 2012. In his capacity as a national advocate for students and the primary spokesperson for student affairs administrators and practitioners, he draws on more than 30 years of experience in higher education.

Prior to NASPA, Dr. Kruger worked for 15 years at the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. During his tenure at the University of Maryland he worked in orientation, student activities, leadership development, admissions, and with the vice president for student affairs office. Dr. Kruger has also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Student Development in Higher Education program at Trinity College in Washington, DC.

Dr. Kruger represents NASPA in national forums such as the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, which includes the leaders of approximately 50 higher education associations. While at NASPA, he has pursued a number of initiatives designed to enhance the association's role in public policy, research, professional development, and student learning and assessment, with a particular interest in the use of technology in serving diverse student populations.

Dr. Kruger has published and presented nationally on leadership development, using technology in student affairs administration, international education and is a regular lecturer on technology in student affairs, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, assessment and student learning. He is the editor of two Jossey-Bass publications, Technology Innovations in Student Services and Using Technology to Promote Student Learning. He also has chapters in The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration; Understanding the Role of Academic and Student Affairs Collaboration in Creating a Successful Learning Environment; Beyond Borders: How International Developments are Changing Student Affairs Practice; and Involving Commuter Students in Learning.

Russell Lowery-Hart, PhD

Amarillo College

President

Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart currently serves as President for Amarillo College, a Leader College for Achieving the Dream.  His leadership is focused on improving student success through systemic and cultural change. In his career, he created several institution-wide initiatives targeting a systemic approach to poverty, curricular reform, instructional improvement, and partnership development across campus “silos.”

Dr. Lowery-Hart was selected into the inaugural class of the Aspen Presidential Fellowship for Community College Excellence, a rigorous executive leadership program led by the Aspen Institute and the Stanford Educational Leadership Initiative.  Dr. Lowery-Hart served as the chair for the Amarillo “No Limits/No Excuses” Partners for Postsecondary Success Collective Impact – a 21 organization collaborative focused on education certificate and degree completion leading to living wage employment. He served as the chair for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee charged with evaluating and redesigning the state of Texas general education requirements.

Dr. Lowery-Hart previously served as Vice-President of Academic Affairs for Amarillo College. He was named the National Council of Instructional Administrators Academic Leader of the Year for 2014. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University; M.A. Texas Tech University; and, B.S. from West Texas State University.

While his calling is education reform, his passion is family.  His wife, Tara, sons Christopher and Campbell, daughter, Cadence fill his life with beauty and joy.

 

Dr. Lance Kennedy-Phillips

Penn State

Vice Provost for Planning and Assessment

Lance Kennedy-Phillips is the Vice Provost for Planning and Assessment.  As vice provost, he is responsible for leading the Office of Planning and Assessment (OPA). OPA provides leadership and support for four essential University functions: institutional research, learning outcomes assessment, accreditation, and strategic planning. 

Lance has over 20 years of experience in higher education administration. He has held positions at DePaul University, The University of Florida, The University of Illinois at Chicago, and The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, Lance served as the founding Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Student Life. He has authored or co-authored 50+ publications on topics ranging from student success to the evolving role of institutional research in higher education. Lance earned his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Illinois University and his masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Lance is a native of Chicago, but is happy to call State College home with his wife Tonya and their three children Aidan, Katherine and Lilian.

Team Leadership Blocks:

All student delegates will be members of one of three teams.  Each team will rotate through three dynamic leadership sessions on Friday, and will then come together to debrief those sessions on Saturday.

                   

David Schaub

Personal Leadership Development

David Schaub is an inspirational speaker who helps students take their next steps in college and beyond. Next steps can be anything that brings you into greater freedom and purpose in your life. From growing up fatherless, David was arrested four times before he was twenty. He then built two businesses from the ground up before he was 26, making six figure incomes from both business endeavors. David is grateful and empowered by every challenge thrown at him.

Clint Cora

Communication

Clint Cora is a former national level corporate manager who hired and managed staff nation wide. With 20 years of corporate experience in pharmaceutical and high tech industries including past positions as a trainer, product marketing manager, national sales manager as well as a MBA, he is in the best position to help students acquire key communication skills for leadership.

Dave Kelly

Organizational Structure

Dave Kelly is a professional serving leadership expert, experienced campus, state, and international student leader and advisor, motivator, author, and trainer. An expert on running better campus organizations and student governments, Dave’s presentations are high energy, interactive, theatrical, filled with humor, stories, fun, and, most importantly, content rich. He has spoken and trained on more than 300 college and university campuses, and is the National Coordinator of APCA Serves!

Melissa Ruiz

Campus Engagement

Melissa Ruiz, MSW began her career in higher education in Conferences and Events, before transitioning into Residence Life and then Student Life and Academic Advising. She jokingly says there isn’t a job in Student Affairs she hasn’t done yet. Melissa is part of a facilitation team at Swift Kick that has been named the best leadership program an unprecedented 5 years and has already trained over half a million leaders around the US and the world including South Korea, Indonesia, and Bermuda. She also co-authored the Amazon.com award winning book “First Year Student to First Year Success.”
